LEARNING CALENDARS FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 1 and 2
Below are calendars of daily activities for students who will be entering grades 1 or 2. These resources are a review of standards from the previous year. Language arts activities should be adjusted for each child's grade level by selecting books on students level.

HIGH FREQUENCY (SIGHT) WORDS
High frequency ( sometimes called sight words or word wall) words are those words that appear in reading materials often. Many of these words do not follow common phonics patterns which means that your child cannot sound them out. They need to be read "by sight". In addition, ability to read these words by sight makes reading more fluent. Finally, many of these words may not carry much meaning when they stand alone. However, they affect the meaning of sentences and make content understandable. Children should be introduced to 1-5 high frequency words a week. These can be studied in isolation, as well as practiced in context.

SUMMER BOOK CLUBS
Summer book clubs are arranged by student's reading levels. Rising grade 2 students have a an online book club , My Father's Dragon, embedded in the learning calendar. Students may also select other books, if they are appropriate for their reading level. Students may complete books up to two levels above their reading level as a read aloud or read with adult, in which case an adult would assist with reading a book, while a student completes blogs and activities Please log reading into a reading log.
BASIC MATH REVIEW
This booklets are designed for practice of basic math skills learned in kindergarten and grade 1.
ADDITIONAL MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS RESOURCES
For students needing enrichment, resources in math and language arts are available based on grade 3 and 4 standards. Before student chooses on of these resources, they should successfully and independently complete resources for their rising grade.
