PRIMARY CHALLENGES
Let's have some fun. Below are four challenges - select one and be creative. CAUTION: your solution might not be perfect and you may try several times. As an engineer, you will constantly revise and improve your design.
PROCESS SHEET
This process sheet will guide your thinking. It is designed for students in grades 4 and up to complete independently. Students in grades 2 and 3 may have some assistance from the parents in reading and explaining the worksheet, but students would do their own writing. For K-1 students, parents are welcome to assist, as well as record or help with writing. NOTE: .doc is editable and you can type your answers. If you do not have access to a printer, just write your responses on any piece of paper!

CONSTRAINTS
All challenges have constraint, or the rules we must follow. All four of our challenges have same material constraint ( you may have received these materials from your school or you can just get your own).
YOU CAN USE ONLY THE MATERIALS ON THE LIST.
( NOTE - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE THEM ALL)
YOU CAN ONLY USE AMOUNTS OF MATERIALS AS STATED ON THE LIST

PRIMARY CHALLENGES
CHALLENGE 1 - MY FATHER'S DRAGON
|
CHALLENGE 2- A GOOD NIGHT FOR GHOSTS
|
This challenge is for students who read the book " My Father's Dragon". If you have not yet read the book but like this challenge, our online book "club" is at http://mydragonsummer.weebly.com/.
CHALLENGE: Elmer Elevator has to rescue a dragon from the island. Wouldn't it be easier if there is good bridge. You can help Elmer. Design a bridge that can hold a half pound bag of sugar (or a dragon!) CONSTRAINTS (have a parent help you measure with the ruler, construct and test a bridge) Materials (listed above) It has to be at least 24 inches long It has to have at least 12inches that are standing at least 2 inches off the ground Only bridge supports can touch the ground The bag has to stay on the bridge for 20 seconds before ANY part of the bridge other than supports touch the ground. MATERIALS 1. 5 sheets of construction paper (any colors) 2. 5 pipe cleaners (any colors) 3. glue stick (small) 4. 10 large paperclips 5. 15 small paper clips 6. 1 pencil 7. 4 straws with elbow (ones that bend) 8. 1/3 yard of 12 " aluminum foil 9. 3 sheets of regular white printer paper 10. 5 craft sticks ( any size - but all need the same size) You may also use unlimited masking or scotch tape. PRIMARY CHALLENGE 3- ME AND MY CAT
Read the book “Me and My Cat”
http://www.storylineonline.net/me-and-my-cat/ While you listen to the story “Me and My Cat” use the Point of View think sheet to describe what you think each character’s point of view is during the day Nicholas and Leonardo switched bodies. Remember that describing the point of view of a character means you are describing what they must be feeling and thinking at that moment. Directions for parents: This challenge is for students after they read the book “Me and My Cat”. You may give your child guidance as they work through their challenge. Do not give your child the answers. Make suggestions and ask your student questions and allow them to really explore the problem. Challenge: The witch who cast the spell on Nicholas and his cat Leonardo is making her rounds and your house could be next! You are going to need to design a witch trap to catch the witch in the event she tries to visit your bedroom. Constraints: Your witch trap must be able to hold 1 cup of sugar. Your trap must have a lid that will fall and close on the witch when she (or the bag of sugar) falls into it.

CHALLENGE Many instruments can be used to play jazz. Your task will be to develop a new instrument, using common materials that will be a part of our Jazz assemble when we return to school. CONSTRAINTS

PRIMARY CHALLENGE 4- MAKE YOUR OWN
The student will need to choose a book to read. You may choose a book you have at home or use the story line online resource listed below. Please remember that you will have to develop an engineering project based on the book. ( http://www.storylineonline.net )
Before you begin reading your story use the prediction portion of the attached think sheet. Remember, making a prediction is when you make an educated guess on what you think will happen. Use the cover page of the book as a resource to make your educated guess. While you read or listen to your story use the sequence of events think sheet to describe what was happening in your story. Remember that sequencing means you are describing the order of events in the story. At the end of your book you will begin developing your engineering project. Directions for parents: This challenge is for students to create after self-selecting a book and reading it. You may give your child guidance as they work through their challenge. Do not give your child the answers. Make suggestions and ask your student questions and allow them to really explore the problem. Challenge: You have self-selected a book to read. What engineering challenge can you develop? The definition of engineering is, “the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures.” When you begin thinking like an engineer the options are limitless! Constraints: Your engineering project must have a connection to your book. You must be able to solve a problem or collect data.
